About

Life in Weirton

Weirton sits in West Virginia's northern panhandle along the Ohio River, practically on the border between three states—Ohio and Pennsylvania are literally across the bridge or just over the hill. The city of about 18,800 people was built around the Weirton Steel Corporation, which at its peak employed over 12,000 people and shaped the entire region's identity. Today, steel's dominance has faded significantly—the mill that once defined the city closed permanently in early 2024—but Weirton Medical Center (a 1,400-person employer and part of the WVU Health System) has become a stable economic anchor, and the site itself is being redeveloped for battery manufacturing.
